The Problem

Healthworker - patient communication is the foundation of good clinical care: From taking a history, to informing patients about their treatment to ensuring that patients receive important discharge information. Too often, healthworkers are unable to understand and communicate to their patients. Could you imagine not being able to understand your doctor?

The Solution

The Open Medicine Project and SpeakMobile, together with other key institutions, have developed a novel phone application that allows health workers to break down the language barrier with their patients. The App provides health workers with a succinct list of phrases used in assessing and treating patients in a primary care setting and provides written and audio translations in multiple African and foreign languages at the touch of a button. It covers everything from assessment of the patient, to treatment and even detailed patient discharge information about common conditions in various languages.
